Number 20 in pencil to margin This is a double-sided page from a 1950 limited edition book wherein Matisse illustrated the 15th Century poems of Charles dOrleans. The book was numbered 738 from an edition of 1,200 printed. It was published by Teriade Editeur of Paris, and printed by Mourlot for Verve, the renowned art periodical. Matisse signed the book from which this is taken, but not this individual page. The images are of the fleur-de-lys, the enduring symbol of France, and closely resemble Matisses original crayon drawing. The poem on the verso is in 15th Century French. Henri Matisse was noted for his use of color and his fluid, brilliant and original draughtsmanship. As a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, Matisse is one of the best-known artists of the twentieth century. He was noted for his ability to bring his eye for colour and geometry to a new medium of utter simplicity, but with playful and delightful power. Provenance Galerie Michael of Beverly Hills, California. Together with certificate of authenticity. The private collection of an American gentleman resident in Sydney Australia.
