Georges Braque
29. "Grand Oiseau Gris",
Original lithograph
42.5 x 108 cm
$12,000

Hand signed in pencil lower right G.Braque. A fine impression from the definitive state from the edition of 95, numbered in pencil next to the signature lower right. Braque, the French painter and sculptor together with Pablo Picasso, pioneered cubism and became one of the major figures of twentieth-century art. After the First World War he moved away from the harsher abstraction of cubism. Working alone, he developed a more personal style, characterized by colour and textured surfaces. He is well known for his many depictions of birds in flight. He produced a considerable number of distinguished paintings, graphics, and sculptures, all imbued with a pervasive contemplative quality. His lithographs are rarely seen and highly prized. He is quoted as saying Form and colour do not merge, there is simultaneity. Provenance The private collection of an American gentleman resident in Sydney Australia.
