Paul has over thirty years experience working in the art and antiques industry with International and Australian Auction Houses.
The son of Art and Antique Dealers, Paul’s early years in the industry were spent in the United Kingdom where he began his career, taking his first auction at age 17.
He emigrated to Australia in 1987 to commence work with Sydney Auction house Rushton Fine Art and joined Christies Australia in 1990, becoming their Sydney Manager in 1992.
He was then headhunted by Sotheby’s Australia, and at age 32 became their youngest ever Managing Director.
Paul held this position until 2001 when he was appointed the Managing Director of Sotheby’s London Auction house at Olympia, London.
He returned to Australia after this contract period to set up a new company Mossgreen with Amanda Swanson which at the time was the first auction house and gallery hybrid.
After nine-years of growth Mossgreen merged with Leski Auctions in 2012 and acquired the former Armadale Picture Theatre in Melbourne where it is currently located. Mossgreen ( Auctions) is now one of Australia’s largest Auction Houses. Paul is himself a respected specialist in the fields of Australian art and Chinese and Asian arts as well as having a good general knowledge of European design,antiques and art.
Paul is additionally involved in many charity and fundraising events and is widely regarded as one of the country’s best and longest serving Charity Auctioneers, having conducted over 500 charity auctions to date, and these have included organisations such as the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Murdoch Art for Science and The Gold Dinner –The Royal Childrens Hospital, Sydney. He donates many hours to assisting the charities in the planning and preparation for these fundraising auctions to ensure maximum results.
Paul is on the Chairman’s Council of The Australian Chamber Orchestra, is Marketing Director for the annual Art and Antiques Dealers Association of Australia (AAADA) Melbourne and Sydney Fairs and is also a member of The Australian Club, Melbourne and Sorrento Golf Club.
Co-Founder and Events and Sponsorship Director
Amanda Swanson has over twenty years’ experience working in the Arts industries across fashion, marketing, commercial art and auction and holds a Bachelor of Arts (Fashion Design) from RMIT.
Co-Founder of Mossgreen with Paul Sumner, she is the Director of Events and Sponsorships and is focused on creating high-end corporate connections, bespoke events and key sponsorship partnerships for Mossgreen via her Extensive knowledge and involvement in all aspects of the Company.
Amanda is also the Creative Director and Head of Department for the Interior Decorator Auction series – one of the Company’s most popular departments that is curated for sale twice a year in Melbourne and Sydney.
She is a member of the World Wildlife Action Fundraising group and regularly assists many high profile Melbourne and Sydney organisations with Charity events and Fundraising Auctions.
Chief Financial Officer
Kylie brings to the role over twenty years of extensive experience working in a finance role and in excess of fourteen years working in the Auction and Collectibles industries. Most recently Kylie has held the position of Business and Finance Manager for Leski Auctions.
